Mortal Kombat live action webisodes

If you are a fan of the Mortal Kombat series you may have noticed an 8 minute "fan" trailer titled: Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, casually making its way around the internet. Directed by Kevin Tancharoen (The Fame remake) and starring Jeri Ryan (Star Trek V.) as Sonya Blade and Michael Jai White (Spawn) as Jax the trailer portrayed a more serious and realistic tone than that of the previous two studio movies. Originally created as a proof of concept for Warner Brothers Tancharoen's aim was to showcase what he could do in terms of a remake, but instead of a studio film he acquired the rights to create a mini series now known as Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

With each episode nearing the 13 minute mark the hard edged reincarnation brings a breath of fresh air to the series ditching the magical/fantasy themes for modern day bullets and grit. From the first episode it's clear that it has potential in terms of story and action, Sonya and Jax aren't just being thrown into an organized one on one death match, there is more of a natural progression stemming from the heat of a gun battle to a disarmed showdown between Jax and Kano. As interesting as the remake is the fighting choreography could do with some work, seeming lifeless and lacking a sense of urgency as if it was being preformed by a robot. As of yet only the first episode has been released so one would expect the choreography to improve as the actors practice for the next installment.

Overall it was enjoyable to watch, not crazy wet my pants enjoyable but "yea that's pretty cool" enjoyable and is definitely something i'll be keeping my eye on. You can find both the original MK:Rebirth trailer and MK:Legacy episode 1 below, so feel free to decide for yourself weather this remake is heading in the right direction.
